Xmas surprises

Nicholas was a young man, who was tragically orphaned, but then inherited a fortune. As a good Christian he used the money to assist the poor and unwell. He worked hard and became the Bishop Myra. He was known for his kindness, charity work and generosity, particularly towards children. Many people became devoted to him and believed that he could perform miracles.
He was made Saint Nicolas, Bishop of Myra and became the patron saint of Russia. In Greece, he is the patron Saint of sailors, in France he was the patron of lawyers, and in Belgium the patron of children and travellers. He was known for his red cape, white flowing beard and bishop’s mitre, awesome branding that still lasts today.
Saint Nicolas died around 340AD and was buried in Myra. We were surprised to learn that in 1087 Italian sailors allegedly stole his remains and reburied him in Bari, Italy. The theft of the legendary Saint only increased his popularity throughout Europe.
Churches all over Europe were keen to honour the Saint. In the 12th Century the feast of Saint Nicholas was celebrated as an official church holiday on the 6th December. To respect the Saint, giving gifts and charity became tradition to celebrate the day.
The Bible fails to mention the day baby Jesus was born so sometime during the 4th Century Pope Julius the first declared that Christ’s birthday was December 25th.
So we now know that the dates for Christmas are really mixed up, but at least the real Santa was an awesome guy.
